NEW RESEARCH CENTRE OF MDRF AT SIRUSERI
 

The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) instituted in 1996, is an outstanding international Centre of Excellence for diabetes research situated at  Gopalapuram in Chennai. Dr.V. Mohan is the President and Dr.M. Rema the Vice-president of the organization. The main objectives of this centre are to promote and conduct high quality research of international standards and to provide a World-class training environment for basic and clinical scientists in the field of diabetes and associated complications.
 
Within a short time, MDRF has gained international and national recognition for its original research contributions. In November 1996, the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research [DSIR] of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India recognized this institute as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization [SIRO]. The following year MDRF was recognized by the Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and the University of Madras for conducting Ph.D. courses. Twenty five students are currently undergoing training for Ph.D degree.

MDRF has a track record of continuous publications in world-class peer reviewed journals.  Over 250 scientific papers published in well-reputed national and international journals, over 300 presentations in various national and international conferences. MDRF has collaboration with several national and international research centres and universities highlighting its commitment to the promotion of diabetes health care and research.

In order to expand MDRF’s activities, a piece of land measuring 6.5 acres was obtained by Dr. M. Rema, Vice President of MDRF and Managing Director and Chief Ophthalmologist of Dr.Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities centre as a woman entrepreneur in the Golden Jubilee Biotech Park for Women Society at Siruseri located 25 kms from the present location of MDRF (Gopalapuram) on the Old Mahabalipuram Road  in Kancheepuram District. This is fast developing as the ‘Knowledge District of Tamil Nadu’. This research centre named as the ‘Kallam Anji Reddy Centre’ is a long cherished dream of Dr.V. Mohan, President of MDRF and Chairman, Dr.Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities centre and Dr.M.Rema.


Thiru. Arcot N. Veerasamy, Hon’ble Minister for Electricity, Government of Tamilnadu inaugurated the Kallam Anji Reddy Centre on the 22nd September 22nd, 2007 at the Taj Connemara, Chennai . During the occasion, Dr. N.K. Ganguly, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) released the MDRF annual report. Prof. M.S.Swaminathan, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, Chairman of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai and Chairman of the Golden Jubilee  Bio-tech Park for Women’s Society at Siruseri and  Dr. Anji Reddy, Founder and Chairman of Dr.Reddy’s Laboratories and Dr. Reddy’s Research Foundation, Hyderabad were the Guests of Honour. Thiru. N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of the Hindu presided over the function.

Goals and objectives of the Kallam Anji Reddy Centre:
The objectives of this Centre are  

    1. To establish an exclusive research Institution for diabetes & its complications in India

    2. To work towards a cure for diabetes

    3. To provide a world class environment for scientists

    4. To train students and scientists in the cutting edge research in diabetes and its complications - (Capacity building)

  • provide world-class academic event for PhD programmes (basic and medical stream) and training opportunities
  • Commercialization of deliverable products from biomedical/biotechnology research in partnering with Govt. of India & industries
